I’m calling to urge you and your colleagues on the Judiciary Committee to support Senate Bill 3. This bill would enact effective sentencing reform that would address decades of failed criminal justice policies that led Ohio to its current ranking as 2nd highest state in the country for opioid deaths.
SB3 would reclassify many low-level, non-violent drug possession offenses as misdemeanors statewide. Felony convictions carry hundreds of consequences impacting the rest of someone’s life. People convicted of drug possession typically need addiction treatment, not the barriers that felony records create for getting back on their feet. With nearly 15% of our overpopulated prisons coming from drug possession convictions, we cannot afford to wait any longer to change our course of action.
Please vote for Senate Bill 3. This bill is a great start towards giving our fellow Ohioans a second chance.
