Illinois lawmakers are considering House Bill 3359, which would expand statewide a tax Chicago imposed streaming audio and video services, like Netflix and other popular platforms.
HB 3359 would levy a 1% tax on streaming and satellite service users and a 5% tax on streaming companies’ gross revenues. The 5% tax burden would likely be passed down to consumers, making their costs rise even more.
This means Illinoisans who pay for and use Netflix, Hulu, satellite TV, smart speakers and other streaming platforms would end up paying the state to enjoy them.
HB 3359 was designed as a revenue-generator. But anyone who pays taxes in the Prairie State knows our lawmakers have a spending problem — not a revenue problem. Illinoisans have the highest overall tax burden in the country.
