Telemedicine is the use of video chat technology to help individuals access their health care provider in lieu of an office visit. It is an industry-changing innovation that connects patients, particularly in rural areas, to the doctors they trust from the safety and comfort of their own homes. And it’s proved invaluable during the pandemic, allowing millions of Americans to continue receiving care while social distancing.
Empowering health care providers to deliver telemedicine would significantly increase health care access. These remote services would have enormous health benefits for patients in underserved areas without reliable access to physicians. Expanding access to telemedicine would also help patients reduce health care expenses.
Recently introduced legislation, House Bill 247 and House Bill 1477, will end technology restrictions on telehealth. These reforms will enable patients to text message with providers where applicable or desired and allow health care workers to deliver pharmaceutical care through telecommunications.
