Last year, President Trump signed the bipartisan First Step Act into law. This was a historic achievement for criminal justice reform.
This legislation will save taxpayer dollars, lead to stronger families, safer communities, and offer second chances to Americans who have earned it. And though many people have already been positively impacted by the law, its full potential will only be realized if it is properly implemented.
To do that, the law must be adequately funded. Additionally, Congress and the Administration should instruct the BOP to issue accurate good time credit. Any implementation effort that falls short of this could prevent many who are ready to transform their lives from getting that chance.
