With just mere hours to read, lawmakers passed a nearly $41 billion budget totaling 1,600 pages before they adjourned.
This budget demonstrates no regard for Illinois taxpayers. It contains pay raises for lawmakers, backpay for public union members and loosened pension rules.
Worse yet, it contains billions of dollars in subsidies for private development companies, including a $6.5 billion project near Chicago’s Soldier Field.
Taxpayers will be on the hook for this blatant and unfair corporate welfare.
Illinois taxpayers deserve a budget that shows some level of fiscal responsibility on the part of their lawmakers. They also deserve a budget that doesn’t take them for a ride to fund another crony boondoggle under the guise of “development.”
Tell lawmakers to repeal this budget and try again.
