SB 2564 would create a new Department of Workforce Development, and SB 2838 would create a new Department of Tourism. These bills would extract portions of existing agencies and create new departments of state government with the same functions.
Our state government already has more than 175 departments, boards, and commissions. The vast majority of those are run by people who are not under the authority of any elected official. After members of these boards are appointed by the governor or lieutenant governor, or in a few cases by other officials, they are largely on their own to do as they want, with little oversight or expectation to act based on the will of the people. Such would be the case in these two departments, with their new boards issuing new regulations however they please, and adding expense to be paid by taxpayers.
