Some lawmakers and Governor Jim Justice want to raise West Virginian’s taxes again—this time hiking the gas tax, the vehicle purchase tax, and numerous DMV fees. All told, this tax increase would cost struggling Mountaineers nearly $147 Million every year once full implemented. West Virginia ranks 18th among states for highest gasoline taxes in the country and this increase may push us top ten! Even worse, Kentucky, Ohio, and Virginia all have lower gas taxes so drivers at the border will have an even bigger reason to go across state lines to buy gas and West Virginia becomes less competitive.
Instead of burdening West Virginia families when they can least afford it, lawmakers should focus on reforming current government spending—this includes the estimated $25-$50 million that the State Division of Highways wastes every year on cost overruns and poor management.
If Governor Justice would like additional road funding, perhaps he should focus on upgrading the management practices of the DOH, as outlined in the audit, before digging deeper into taxpayers’ pockets.
Just like President Obama, Gov. Justice says his gas tax will create construction jobs. But, raising the gas tax will really only hurt West Virginians and our economy. Stand with us and ask your legislator to oppose the gas tax hike.
