Thank you for continuing to stand up for lower property taxes here in Texas.
Texas has some of the highest property taxes in the nation and the process is confusing and difficult to navigate. Whether it is the local school district, city council, or municipal utility district, property taxes continue to go up and we feel the financial burden every year.
Everyone pays property taxes, whether they own a home or rent a house, apartment, or condo. As property values continue to go up, the price of rent and other goods and services will also increase.
Such a rise in cost of living hurts seniors and those on fixed incomes and could possibly slow down the economic engine that has made Texas the envy of the nation.
There are 2 easy steps the Legislature can take to provide REAL property tax relief:
- Lower the roll back rate from 8% to 4%. If a local entity proposes a tax increase beyond 4%, then the increase would have to be approved by the voters during the next election.
- Eliminate the petition gathering requirement for local rollback elections. Currently citizens must gather thousands of signatures to force it on to the ballot during the next election to challenge a property tax increase.
These common sense reforms will make sure that the American Dream of home ownership remains alive in the State of Texas.
