A coalition has formed to call for increasing the Louisiana gas tax. They say the increase would be used to fix roads, but there’s more to it than that. The coalition is made up of road builders and industry leaders who would directly benefit from an increase in gas taxes.
Their proposal would raise the gas tax by 18 cents on every gallon of gas, hiking the gas tax to 56.4 cents per gallon.
That isn’t fair, and it isn’t right.
Louisianans pay enough at the pump as it is. If lawmakers want to fix our roads, they should do so with the money they already have in the state budget rather than put a heavier burden on taxpayers. They certainly shouldn’t cater to special interests at taxpayer expense.
