In the coming days, Pennsylvania’s elected officials need to pass a budget that reflects the reality of our situation by incorporating the following principles:
- Eliminating the favoritism inherent in the state’s corporate welfare spending: In May 2020 Americans for Prosperity-PA identified over $729 million in annual such payments that benefit favored private businesses at taxpayer expense. Continuing to fund them, especially given the Commonwealth’s current condition, represents poor economic and fiscal policy.
- Opposing any new or expanded taxes: Pennsylvania’s families and businesses are already overburdened under the existing tax code, and with the Commonwealth’s economy reeling from the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, any new or expanded taxes will only stifle desperately needed economic activity.
- Opening the Commonwealth’s economy to promote real economic growth: Policymakers can and must find ways to open Pennsylvania’s economy safely while protecting those in the greatest danger from COVID-19.
Time is of the essence. Take action before it’s too late!
