Last year, President Donald Trump signed the First Step Act into law. This legislation creates reforms in the criminal justice system to save taxpayer dollars, decrease the crime rate and help those looking for a new start at life.
Missouri lawmakers are following that example by introducing their own version of criminal justice reform – the Missouri First Step Act.
Among other things, this bill would:
- Increase transparency and build trust between law enforcement and communities
- Increase access to work for formerly incarcerated individuals
- Ensure both female and elderly inmates are treated with more dignity
- Remove incentives for law enforcement to seize private property before someone has been convicted of a crime.
These steps would make our streets safer, take a burden off taxpayers and ensure law enforcement is able to do its job well.
