An effective criminal justice system preserves public safety, respects human dignity and restores victims. Florida has taken strides to uphold these goals, but still has a long way to go.
Evidence has shown that unnecessarily harsh sentences for lower-level crimes do not increase public safety.
HB 339 would give courts greater flexibility to rule on cases outside those sentencing guidelines. Without having to adhere to one-size-fits-all mandatory minimums, judges will be better able to pass down sentences that fit the crimes.
It’s time to enact policies that are smart on crime and soft on taxpayers.
