Politicians in Nashville shouldn’t be choosing winners and losers in business. But that’s exactly what they’re doing by imposing a burdensome tax on certain companies.
In Tennessee, a nearly 10 percent amusement tax is placed on gyms and fitness centers. That tax is reflected in membership dues and fees.
But here’s the catch – the tax applies only to some fitness centers. Big, brand-name companies are exempt from the amusement tax, leaving small businesses to pay the harsh tax. That kills competition and hurts the success of smaller centers.
Tennessee shouldn’t put small businesses at a disadvantage through an excessive tax. Instead, the amusement tax for centers should be eliminated to create a level playing field for businesses.
