In 2017, Indiana state legislators approved a bill that increases vehicle registration, diesel fees and the cost of gas by 10 cents a gallon. The tax hike is projected to cost residents $1.2 billion annually by 2024.
With $2 billion in reserves and a projected $1 billion revenue increase, lawmakers should be focusing on finding budget savings to pay for state and local road developments and repairs, not hiking our taxes.
Only an estimated 15 percent of the gasoline sales tax is spent on roads, while 85 percent of the revenue is spent on unrelated projects.
