Americans for Prosperity – Minnesota is committed to helping break barriers through a range of public policy reforms.
In this legislative session, one of our key focuses is on “Re-Entry Identification,” which is found in bill HF553.
This bill focuses on streamlining the re-entry process for those who have served their time in order to provide a better opportunity for a second chance. The Re-Entry Identification policy would assist those released to obtain a social security card, birth certificate, necessary medication, a driver’s license (if qualified), or other identification cards.
An additional benefit of this policy is the establishment of a homelessness mitigation plan. With more than 10 percent of those coming in and out of prisons and jail homeless in the months before their incarceration, a comprehensive mitigation plan is needed to ensure proper housing following release.
These elements within the bill are key contributors to assist individuals with re-establishing themselves in the community and having a better chance of securing employment and housing.
With this policy change, we are respecting the dignity of all humans, reducing the recidivism rate, and removing the barriers that have prevented individuals who are released from prison the ability to obtain a job, housing, and education.
