Abundant, affordable, and reliable energy is a key driver of prosperity in Pennsylvania. A robust and diverse supply guided by market signals free of subsidies and contradictory rules is essential to use only resources to their highest value.
The Marcellus shale is a 65-million-acre formation running through Ohio, West Virginia, western Pennsylvania, and southern New York and has been a boon for Pennsylvania’s economy.
In 2007, the first year of what became known as the “shale boom,” producers drilled 116 new wells in Pennsylvania. Ten years later, the state had 10,097 active unconventional wells.
This rapid expansion in production has brought significant economic benefits to many communities in our state. However, this tremendous progress could be stifled if the persistent proposal to introduce a severance tax on the unconventional gas industry ever becomes law.
Such a tax would discourage new companies from coming into the state while at the same time would hinder the investment climate for companies already here to expand their operations.
Pennsylvania already has a natural gas Impact Fee, and it would be misguided to think that the introduction of a severance tax would not be felt by all sectors of the economy, not just the natural gas industry.
We don’t need a new severance tax. Sign the petition to show your support for no new taxes in Pennsylvania!
