Proposal would chain taxpayers to millions in jail debt
What would you do with an extra $3 million dollars?
That’s how much money Scott County taxpayers will lose if the commission goes forward with a misguided plan to replace the county jail.
A new resolution passed by Scott County commissioners would cost an additional $5 million to demolish the old jail and build a new one. If they just refurbished the current jail, it would only cost $2 million, saving taxpayers $3 million dollars!
This new spending proposal is especially troubling considering you and your fellow taxpayers already shelled out $11.5 million for an addition in 2015.
It’s not like we have millions of dollars to throw around. Taxpayers will be on the hook for the next 20 years to pay back the bond for this project, yet the jail’s capacity will remain the same.
The Scott County council is voting on this funding on Wednesday, June 28th. Before they vote, let them know taxpayers can’t afford their fiscally irresponsible plan for the county jail. Enough is enough!
