North Dakota desperately needs civil asset forfeiture reform.
Right now, the government can seize the property of North Dakotans, even if no charges are filed. And if a person wants their property back, they must first go through a lengthy legal process.
Often, that process can cost more than the property is worth.
Civil asset forfeiture also allows the government to keep or sell that property, too. This is a violation of due process. The burden should be on the government, not private individuals, to prove that property is being possessed illegally.
