It’s a sad truth: ineffective criminal justice policies don’t just fail to make Tennessee safer, they leave countless broken families and communities in their wake. There’s a better way.
Through legislative action and community-based efforts we can make the necessary progress in protecting our communities and unlocking second chances for people who want to become positive, productive members of society.
We can ensure individuals can contribute positively to their communities after paying their debt to society. The good news is the legislature is working on a number of bills that will break barriers for Tennesseans, including: civil asset forfeiture and pre-trial bond reforms, driver’s license and voting rights restoration, removing expungement fees, and citations in lieu of arrest.
These reforms will help all Tennesseans get opportunities to pursue their American dream. Prison and jail space should be prioritized for violent offenders and those that are a risk to public safety, not for those who simply are unable to pay fines or fees.
Conservative states like Texas, Georgia, and South Carolina have all been national leaders in criminal justice reform, expanding rehabilitation programs to reduce recidivism among released inmates. By pursuing prison and sentencing reforms similar to those in the FIRST STEP Act, Texas was able to shut down 8 prisons and now has its lowest crime rate since 1967.
Tennessee should follow suit.
